Cosmetic Dermal Fillers
Cosmetic dermal fillers
Overview
Cosmetic dermal fillers are substances that are injected just below the surface of the skin to fill in lines, wrinkles, and scars. Unlike face lifts that stretch the skin, fillers add volume for a more natural, youthful appearance.

The most common areas treated are the smile lines around the nose and mouth, fine lines above the mouth, frown lines between the eyes, and acne scars. Fillers can also increase the fullness of the lips and lessen the downward slant of the corner of lips.

Differences from BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers are both injectable treatments used to correct lines and wrinkles. However, each class of cosmetic treatment achieves results through different methods. While BOTOX® Cosmetic immobilizes and relaxes facial muscles causing the facial lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers are injected into the targeted area to actually "fill" the lines and smooth out the appearance of the skin. Both treatments are relatively long-lasting but ultimately temporary.

Candidates for Cosmetic Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are some of the fastest-growing non-surgical treatments to counter the effects of aging. Patients who wish to significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, vertical lip lines, crow's feet, and depressions from the loss of underlying facial tissue may be suitable to undergo treatment with cosmetic dermal fillers.

Patients who should not consider this type of treatment include those with autoimmune disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue disorder, and women who are nursing or pregnant.
